You’ve lost me BMW
Overrated IMO- BMW
Underrated- Genesis, Mazda

overrated - BMW for sure, T
esla
underrated - hyundai/kia seems to be making nice stuff and i feel there are a lot of people (like me until recently) that would never consider a hyundai or kia due to what they made in the 90s and early-mid 2000s

i agree with Nibby

I wanted to put Tesla as overrated but they have achieved quite a lot by carving out a premium/luxury electric niche with the s and x and despite the problems with the 3.
I will hovever revisit this stance in 2 years when they've compared Teslas to the Taycans eTrons MB EQCs iPaces and more who would have proliferated the market.

i really think once the luxury automakers like audi and MB join the electric fray tesla will start to go down... having decades of automotive engineering experience, better build quality, better interiors, etc. will go a long way. tesla is a bit of a fad but let’s see what happens in 5 years

Over - Nissan (should be in the trash heap) everything is crap or too old (Z & GTR).
Over - Mazda there is no MAZDASPEED anymore! How can they be relevant without a proper skunk works or a rotary?!
Under - Toyota produces things everyone buys doesn’t lose money on and PRO all the things! New Supra... yes please. If only they’d produce another rally fighter and make TRD more AMG-ish!

I used to drive a 2010 Elantra. It was a great car. Good gad mileage, incredibly r eliable, great warranty (best of anyone IMO), super low maintenance cost. I would absolutely buy one... for someone who didn’t give a rat’s ass about driving. Seriously, that thing was so numb. U ndersteered like a champ, too. An entirely mechanical handbrake was its one saving grace. It was really well balanced for a sicc handbrake turn.

Nissan should rodused itself to just the Frontier and a Frontier based SUV. Keep them both utilitarian and make itself a 90s Kia of the truck world

Over: Ferrari. Just, gtfo already with the Prancing Horse bs. Overpriced , arrogant Italian crap.
Under: I dont really know. My first response was ‘Lotus’, because I feel the Evora doesnt get enough love. Maybe Jaguar..? I honestly dont know...

Overrated-Subaru-made a good name for themselves with quirky cars with economy, reliability, all wheel drive, performance. Have lagged or been equalled or surpassed by most other car makers in a lot of these areas for the last decade or so.
Underrated—Ford and Chevy, still struggling to overcome the deserved criticism they got for the (lack of) reliability and quality as well as dated technology used in their cars of the 70s and 80s.

This is hard for me to weigh on as I don’t get much experience with new cars, but
Over rated: Dodge they bring nothing to the table but hp numbers. This wouldn’t be the case if Ram was part of the brand but for some reason they are separate
Also over: GMC
Under rated: idk depends who you ask

Overrated: Tesla. Heavy cars with substandard interiors and vengeful fanbois.
Underr ated: Old cars. Many of them have actual steering feel.

Overrated- BMW
Underrated - Genisis
![]() 10/06/2018 at 00:42 |

You know I’ll say genesis and kia are underrated. I think Audi is overrated. Today’s Toyota is overrated. Buick is probably underrated and underestimated by most people. Cadillac is coming up in the market but still doesn’t get their due.
![]() 10/06/2018 at 01:06 |

Overrated - Toyota. Yes, they sell well. But do they do anything class-leading? Genre-defining? Have they in the past... Oh, I don’t know. Ten years? I only say this because I miss old Toyota :(
Underrated - Tesla. HOLD ON LET ME SAY MY PIECE. While they've bee the around for a number of years now, on an automotive scale they're still absolute infants. And yet... There is a very good argument that they currently have the most brand cachet out of any manufacture. For ELECTRIC vehicles. Imagine if someone told you electric cars would be "cool" and "desirable" back in the early 2000's. Plus, they're just impressive vehicles all around. Weird to think that that a chubby SUV you see everyday now is faster than every other car on the road (okay, barring some veeeery rare circumstances.)

Toyota is overrated
Audi is overrated
GM(outside america) is underrated
Ford is overrated
Subaru is underrated (fuckin CVTs)

Overrated: Ferrari
Underrated: Also Ferrari.
Why?
Because Ferrari the brand is overrated, but its newer cars get a little less press relative to its competitors in the super-exotic tier. It’s not hard to think that Ferrari is merely resting on its laurels (the overrated bit), but it does feel like every other new supercar is trying to prove its worth, while the 812 and 488 Pista confidently swaggers to the ball knowing it’s the real showstopper.
A truly underrated marque is Aston Martin. They’re ambitious, but their new cars aren’t rubbish so far. At any rate, they’re on the right track.

Overrated - Mazda. Their cars seem (to me at least) to lack the character that they once had.
Underrated - Kia. Because Stinger.
![]() 10/06/2018 at 02:58 |

Overrated: All cars made in the last 15 years.
Underrated: old cars

Does a rotary count if it's a range extender?

Someone’s always gotta be the contrarian and blame Tesla. All they did was change and industry that’s been unchanged for fifty years, making waves the established giants couldn’t have pulled off and all these years later are still scrambling to catch up to!
![]() 10/06/2018 at 05:35 |

Overrated - Maybe BMW or something. The brand is built on the idea of sports-oriented cars, I wonder how long they can apply that marketing to shit SUVs before people catch on..
Maybe Nissan because I feel
they haven’t made a worthwhile car in a long time, they’re becoming a
Toyota but without the Toyota bits
Underrated - Not Mazda, AFAIK Mazda slay the sales in Australia, impossible to call that underrated. Probably Kia. I think the Stinger does absolutely everything right and makes BMW/Lexus/Infiniti look stupid

Mazda is definitely underrated. Overrated i would say Audi.

Aston is a great underrrated choice didn’t think of that.

Subaru is definitely overrated AF. A lot of other manufacturer s are making Safe AWD “ outdoorsy” oriented vehicles with better interiors and better infotainment and better engines and most importantly for me, no CVTs . Subaru is still riding the wave they built up in the 90s and early 2000s.
![]() 10/06/2018 at 08:46 |

Makes sense from an Australian perspective.

wait, I’m confused Subaru is Underrated? Because of Cvts? I thought they are one of the most overhyped brands today.
![]() 10/06/2018 at 09:17 |
|
Yea, I’m not taking that away from them. But they’ve been really arrogant about it and been making tons of mistakes along the way... and there’s no guarantee they’ll be around for a while. They seem to have their head so far up their own ass they’re not learning from mistakes.

Overated: T he NFL and “ Ecoboost”.
Underrated: Being branded a “ nice guy”.
![]() 10/06/2018 at 10:47 |

Hmm overrated: All major German brands, Honda, and Nissan
Underrated: Hyundai and Kia
Don’t get me wrong... I wouldn’t buy a Hyundai or a Kia either, but honestly they’ve been producing much more competitive cars than the Japanese for a while now. The Soul, Veloster, Stinger, to name a few, are all at least cool, good value, and available in manual. If they’d just stick a fast engine (2 50hp+) i n the first two, I’d be tempted.
As for the rest.... They know did.

over rated, probably BMW. dont get me wrong, still make a few decent cars. but enough sports activity vehicles, you aint fooling anyone
under-rated, either kia or volvo. Volvo is doing some crazy things with safety and tech, and kia is being kia.

I think sometimes j ournalists make CVTs seem worse than they are. Subaru makes good “meh” cars, despite the gearboxes. Though I agree the WRX is overhyped as hell.

Ford’s reliability and quality issues still exist today, possibly stronger than ever.

Subaru is junk compared to what it once was. Of course they have always been literal junk as any belief that they’re reliable is snake oil. Head gasket replacements galore!!!
![]() 10/06/2018 at 17:49 |

That’s true. I think mistakes are more than acceptable for such a new company in such a difficult area (given that Ferrari and GM and such are known for their own problems). But arrogance? Not learning? No good

I think the big 3 german brands are a bit overrated. Between family friends and co workers i have a hard time of folks I know justifying crazy upkeep problems. I t is one thing in a 20k subaru, but a 50k audi shouldn’t have oil burning problems.
